Plan D And M Comparison
Plans D and M are the quiet middle letters: both cover the Part A deductible fully, both add foreign travel emergency coverage, and both leave the Part B deductible with you — D differs from G only in details most people never hit.
| Feature | Plan D | Plan M |
|---|---|---|
| Part A deductible | Covered | Covered (50% in some filings — check carrier) |
| Part B coinsurance | 100% | 100% |
| Skilled nursing coinsurance | 100% | 50% |
| Foreign travel emergency | 80% to limits | 80% to limits |
| Part B deductible | You pay | You pay |
Why D loses to G in practice
D and G differ only in the Part B excess-charge treatment and skilled-nursing share — and D is priced close enough to G in most markets that G wins the comparison almost everywhere. D exists mainly for completeness of the standardized menu (see the full plans board).
Where M earns its keep
M splits the Part A deductible 50/50 and skilled nursing 50/50, pricing it near N. It suits moderate users in states where M rates undercut N; verify with the state rules board whether your state carriers even file M — availability is spotty.
FAQ
Is Plan D the same as Part D drug coverage?
No — unrelated. Medigap Plan D is a supplement letter; Part D is the standalone prescription plan.
Do D or M cover excess charges?
Neither. Only G, F, and the closed legacy C do.
