Plan G Full Coverage After The Part B Deductible
Plan G is the most chosen Medigap plan among people newly eligible for Medicare: pay the annual Part B deductible yourself, and the plan covers the rest of the gaps Original Medicare leaves — with no network and no referrals.
| Coverage Item | Plan G Treatment |
|---|---|
| Part A hospital coinsurance & benefit periods | Fully covered |
| Part A hospice & skilled nursing coinsurance | Fully covered |
| Part B deductible (2025: $257) | You pay once per year |
| Part B coinsurance (after deductible) | 100% covered |
| Part B excess charges | Fully covered — rare with assigned providers |
| Foreign travel emergency (80%) | Covered to plan limits |
Why G became the default after Plan F closed
Since Plan F closed to new Medicare eligibles on January 1, 2020, G has absorbed its role: identical core coverage except the Part B deductible. Because G premiums historically run lower and carriers price it more competitively, our Plan N comparison is the only alternative most shoppers weigh against it. See all options on the plans board.
Pricing reality check
Plan G pricing is attained-age in most states: the premium at 65 is often $120–170/month but climbs over time, which is why our pricing-model file matters more than the teaser rate. Quote at least three carriers — the same Plan G letter can differ 40%+ between carriers in the same ZIP.
FAQ
Is Plan G better than Plan N?
G covers the Part B excess charges and has no office copays; N is cheaper monthly but adds copays. Heavy healthcare users often break even with G — see the N-vs-G cost math file.
Does Plan G cover dental, vision, or prescriptions?
No. Medigap plans cover Medicare gaps only; add a separate Part D drug plan.
